Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

Week seven is synchronous, with class on Saturday (03/07/26). Students will read about understanding neighborhoods and communities in the textbook and reflect on the content in the forums. They will also consider their own community and explore prevention and coalition work. The in-class agenda is forthcoming.

Unit Assignments

Read

  • Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2018) Chapter Eight Understanding Neighborhoods and Communities

W-07 A-01: Asynchronous Participation and Engagement

The expectation is that each of your replies will be substantive and provide meaningful perspectives, contributing to the forum’s conversation and scholarship. They can be related to the prompts or building on conversations shared by peers. There are three forums for this week, and you are expected to make at least 3 replies across any of the forums and read all of your peers’ replies. These forums include the following:

  • Questions from Chapter Eight Content draws on textbook teaching guides to prompt students to respond to a wide range of questions about community theory and macro practice.
  • Students explore coalition-based macro practice resources through the Athena Forum in Exploring CPWI Coalitions, reflecting on how coalitions connect to course content.
  • Students apply key concepts from the textbook to their own neighborhoods and communities in Reflecting on Your Community.

Unit Resources

You can listen to a podcast episode for this week’s reading Chapter 08: Understanding Neighborhoods and Communities, or see the entire series Podcast Series.
