Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

Week 15 is asynchronous. Students read Chapter 13 of Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2018), which focuses on how social workers can use supervision effectively to strengthen professional practice and navigate complex workplace relationships. The forums invite students to reflect on their own practicum supervision experiences, report what they would do in response to case examples, explore current literature on supervision models, and deepen their understanding of acronyms used in social work settings.

The learning objectives for the week include:

  • Describe strategies for effectively using supervision in generalist social work practice
  • Analyze case scenarios involving supervisory challenges and identify appropriate responses
  • Reflect on engagement with supervision
  • Effectively use supervision, improve supervisory relationships, and enhance the communication process
  • Identify acronyms and professional terminology commonly used in social work and agency settings

Unit Assignments

Read

W-15 A-01: Asynchronous Participation and Engagement

The expectation is that each reply will be substantive and contribute meaningfully to the forum’s conversation and scholarship. There are five forums this week, and students are expected to make at least five replies across any of the forums. These forums include the following:

  • Students reflect on their practicum supervision experience and share how they have implemented (or struggled with) the strategies from the reading in the how do you use supervision in practicum forum.
  • The What Would You Do: Case Scenarios forum presents six vignettes directly from the textbook, each ending with a challenge to students to identify how they would handle a difficult supervisory situation.
  • In Chapter 13 Textbook Questions, students engage with discussion prompts drawn from the teaching guides covering supervisory functions, supervisee expectations, and professional conduct.
  • Models and Practices for Supervision asks students to search for current literature on supervision and share their findings with the class.
  • Students contribute to a list of social-work-adjacent acronyms in the Sharing Acronyms forum.
