Your reading article is attached in the weeks course work. I’ll post the lecture video later this week.
Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn
Week 11, we will be continuing to apply the ethical reasoning strategies to case studies, looking at how we personally connect with social work values, and planning our groups for next week’s group assignment.
Week 11 Objectives:
- Discuss the role the value Integrity has in our lives.
- Expand knowledge of ethical reasoning strategies.
- Apply the Essential Steps model to more case studies.
Unit Assignments
Listen/Watch/Read
- Read Paul and Elder (2006) (see attached below) pages 1-16
- Watch my lecture video, which I will probably post Thursday
W-11 A-01: Asynchronous Class Engagement and Participation
The expectation is that each of your replies will be substantive and provide meaningful perspectives, contributing to the forum’s conversation and scholarship. They can relate to the prompts or build on conversations your peers share. This week, there are five forums, and you are expected to make at least 3 replies across any of the forums and read all of your peers’ replies. You will also see that there is a forum for each group for next week’s assignment, and you should make at least 1 reply in there helping make a plan for next week with your group. These forums include the following:
- Tell us about a time integrity played a key role, or about the fallout when it was missing, in Ethical Principle: Integrity (Sec 0 or Sec 2).
- In The Thinker’s Guide to Understanding the Foundations of Ethical Reasoning - The Function of Ethics and The Problem of Pseudo-Ethics (Sec 0 or Sec 2), share what stands out in the reading, how its argument for ethical reasoning is built, and where you agree, disagree, or see it in real life.
- A therapist who considers making agency records public to expose racially discriminatory practices is the case you work through with steps 1-4 in Case Study Practice: Whistleblowing (Sec 0 or Sec 2).
- Case Study Practice: Bartering for Services (Sec 0 or Sec 2) asks you to apply the same steps to a new private practitioner weighing therapy in exchange for a client’s interior design work.
- The last case, in Case Study Practice: Managing Client Fraud (Sec 0 or Sec 2), is a social worker deciding whether to discourage a client from reporting brief part-time work on his disability application.
- Your A-04 group’s forum is where you meet your group and plan when and how you will hold your chat during week 12: Sec 0 Group 1, Sec 0 Group 2, Sec 0 Group 3, Sec 0 Group 4, Sec 0 Group 5, Sec 0 Group 6, Sec 0 Group 7; or Sec 2 Group 1, Sec 2 Group 2, Sec 2 Group 3, Sec 2 Group 4.
Unit Resources
The NASW Code of Ethics (2021) is available online and in your textbook and is helpful in your discussion about the case examples. You can also see the Essential Steps for Ethical Decision Making on the National Association of Social Workers - Massachusetts Chapter (n.d.) website.
The three case studies for this week’s forums are handouts here: Case Study Practice: Whistleblowing, Case Study Practice: Bartering for Services, and Case Study Practice: Managing Client Fraud. Each one has the case and Reamer’s commentary from Appendix B of your textbook, Reamer (2023), along with the standards to start from and the four steps to work through.
Your reading this week is from a booklet published by Paul and Elder (2006) The Thinker’s Guide to Understanding the Foundations of Ethical Reasoning, which is attached below as a resource.
Next week we will complete A-04: Ethical Decision-Making Case Study Group Chat (Sec 0 or Sec 2), and I have picked group members for everybody. You can see the groups below.
You can watch all of the lecture videos for this class (Sec 0 or Sec 2). I will post this week’s video later this week (probably Thursday).
