National Park City in July 2019 with hundreds of
launches across the city and a charter produced to
support other cities to do the same. As their website
states: We want more bird song, ultimate frisbee,
hill-rolling, tree climbing, cycling, hedgehogs,
volunteering, sharing, outdoor play, kayaking, clean
air, otters, greener streets, outdoor learning, ball
games, outdoor art and hilltop dancing in the city.
Why
Why not, indeed? And what if? What if your school
were a national park? What if you turned your paved
front yard into a wildflower meadow? What if we
reconnected fragmented landscapes to nurture
wildlife habitats? What if, in fact, we acknowledged
that wildlife is good for public health? London
National Park City is a stunning example of a good
what-if question, something we'll be exploring in
more detail later. The campaign cultivates so many
opportunities for people to get involved, have a voice,
or become citizen scientists. Diverse organisations
and individuals can identify a role and make
contributions in a rich, organic and enlivening way.
