Policy Practice and Social Work: The Who, Why, & What
https://presentations.jacobrcampbell.com/GcrJJx/

I'm a father, husband, and educator committed to growing as a person and creating change for those with less power. I serve as an Associate Professor of Social Work at Heritage University. My work spans school social work, mental health, and youth with behavioral challenges. I'm passionate about educational innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and supporting students in becoming effective change agents.
I like the IndieWeb idea of owning my own data and having my website be the place that links to everything I do. This is everything I post, here and on other sites (blog posts, presentations, new words, notes, photos, videos, and workouts), gathered in one place.

Pushing Myself More - The 2026 Chelanathon
https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2026/10/pushing-myself-more-the-2026-chelanathon/

I'll be one of the presenters for our Policy Day event this week. It should be a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to encouraging students to see themselves as community change agents.

I wrote this at the start of summer, but it has been sitting in my drafts. I didn't end up backpacking, but I was able to do the rest of it.
Touching Grass - Summer Self Care (https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2026/09/touching-grass-summer-self-care/)

I tend to side with parental rights and want to give parents the opportunity to raise their children as they see best, but 15 deaths in 10 years that could have been preventable is outrageous. My understanding in states that don’t have these kind of prohibitions making the case for medical neglect is incredibly cumbersome (which is probably the right call) but a blind because of religion clause in the state constitution is so problematic.

There are many reasons to really write it yourself, but this a really good one.

My MSW Program Earned Accreditation (https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2026/07/my-msw-program-earned-accreditation/)

I'm so proud of the team I work with at Heritage University. For the last three years, we have been working to become accredited for a new MSW program. I learned so much helping go through the accreditation process. We got notice earlier this week that the BOA granted us initial accreditation (we did the BSW reaccreditation this year as well, so we have been steeped in accreditation work). It is now posted publicly.

Summer Camping and Hiking, Getting Out Into Nature

@amyworrall I haven’t made customs ones yet.
@amyworrall it doesn’t really fit in your context, but I’m not a developer and like to use them when I make presentations and then I also use them on my Stream Deck and things like that. Just use the app, search, then copy them.

It is so foreign to consider freedom from suffering to be a pleasure or a negative happiness.
I do like when I try to add a word to my little dictionary project, only to find that I already added it before. The updated version now has a source, as no idea where I read this before.
I didn't really use the CIA's World Factbook. I'm pretty sure I cited it in a paper for school, which I wrote and have looked at from time to time. I was reading Tuck and Yang (2012) Decolonization is not a metaphor. They were talking about Haiti's history and shared a link to it. When I went to the page, I found an article posted as a “fond farewell" to Facebook in February 2026. No real reason or rationale provided, just gone with the “encouragement" displayed in the attached screenshot. Sad

I write about the boat ride I took down the Amazon in Delays, Couchsurfing, and Boats… Oh My (Brazil) (https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2009/10/delays-couchsurfing-and-boats-oh-my-brazil)
We are getting ready to go camping next week, so spent some time pulling out camping gear. The bins we keep stuff in, got left open and mice chewed through everything. While frustrating, the one real loss is the Hammock from Brazil that I have. More recently I got a new one from Puerto Rico that is hung up in our patio, but that hammock was very nice and had senemental value. Maybe it’s a sign I need to go visit the Amazon (not the online store) again.

@peterwyrm thank you. I do really like shortcuts. I have many that I use to do different things.
I ended up making a shortcut that works. I tried using Viticci’s shortcut generator, which got me most of the way there, but then I remade it. There is a link if you would like to use the generator; it works pretty well. It does use an LLM to parse the names (e.g., make it last name, first initial), but otherwise, you are drawing from data directly in the database.

Probably too long to be successful as a #tiktok but who knows. #Pixar's Hoppers, #Nature, and #selfcare. Wrote about it for our newsletter, and thought I should make a short video about it, too.

@alexcox my daughter had 20 something gigs on her maps. Deleting the app didn’t resolve it. We ended up having to reinstall iOS and that finally got rid of it. But her storage was completely full and the data stored in documents and data there kept making it impossible to anything on her phone. She said she never downloaded offline maps so not really sure how it bloated. But annoying to not have a reliable way to delete.
@ojala I love using a citation manager (I use Bookends, but used Zotero for long time and recommend it to students). I feel like trying to use it to organize your lecture notes would really go against what it is designed to do and so you would be fighting it and having to make custom meta data. It is really designed to have the source materials we cite (journal articles, books, or others) in our academic writing or dissemination verses organizing the things we are learning. But, you could…

I didn't remember seeing anything about having a TEDx event in Richland, but I came across this. Such a good talk and love that it took place in my community.

Very interesting recent episode of the InSocialWork podcast…
[Psychedelics: Harm Reduction for Inexperienced Users](https://www.insocialwork.org/psychedelics-harm-reduction-for-inexperienced-users/)
This might be the first executive order since he has taken office that might not be a terrible idea. It is wild to have it be I initiated by a conservative influencer sending a text message. But maybe the result isnt a bad idea? I don’t know enough of what the potential ramifications of this fast tracking might cause, but I am very interested in this field of study.

My lecture video for my macro class this week was focused on technology. I don't usually get to talk about technology. It was fun getting to talk about it. The video is shared with my slides.

So glad of my students and great events. Lots of great photos shared.

I feel pretty happy with my final product. Black back plate is a #3dprint I created to hang my TRMN. I export a json file from my https://vsp.ink/now page and it gets displayed on the screen.

I had to add some of the tasks I've been doing over the last couple of days so that this pie is filled out... but getting ready to go to a conference and knowing I still have a lot of grading is anxiety-provoking. Glad to have a place to get it out of my brain and a list of the things I need to do.
And my little dictionary of words and stories.

Such a fun story. I really liked it!
I’m not sure I understand how locks work inside. It might be that there is just tension and won’t release because of that, but if I put in the pin, 1 or .5 either up or down from that pin, it won’t release. Maybe they don’t follow a synchronous pattern and one number is 4 up and the other 2 down? But basically it means I need to buy a new lock or start binge watching the lock picking lawyer.
Presentation proposal with some of my colleagues submitted! I hope we get selected, it will be a great workshop, and I think we have some good things to share. #academic #SocialWork #speaking

In my car I always have a cart with things I use for my classes and teaching. The wheels made it roll around in my trunk whenever I start/stop. Being able to make a pair of little plastic stopper pads that I can put in my trunk to stop this is incredibly cool. I only printed one, as I wasn’t confident it would work. Also probably will add Velcro to the bottom so it sticks to floor. But excited it fit! #3dprint

While reading Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2018), I came across modicum as a new word. I’m sure I’ve heard this before, but I don’t think I could be satisfied with just a token amount.
We do talk about how it is very over-sensationalized in how they describe the topics... not really the academic tone we can use in our writing and discourse.
I have started generating a podcast episode each week for my students. I have the PDF of the chapters and asked Google Notebook LM to generate it based on that. We talked about it not being a replacement for the reading, but something they can listen to if they want more review of the materials in a different format. Students talk about liking it.

Doesn’t quite make me really like Snow, but does give him more humanity and understanding to his psyche. It’s interesting going back to 0 and going back in time. Somehow I didn’t realize there was this one and ended up going back listening to .5 before coming to this one.

I’m going through and cleaning out old drafts notes I had. So many interesting things. I always write little notes everywhere. I came across a not that define a life interaction model:
The way you choose to act, speak, or treat people can be the basis for how people respond to you.
lifeInteractionModel(){
Respect != Dignity,
Dignity == Everyone
}
Code is respect does not equal dignity they are two things. Also defines dignity as being equal for everyone. Pretty ok life interaction model.
I think I watched the movies when they came out (had to be on #TeamJacob when that was the question just because of our matching names). My daughter decided she wanted to read them so I figured I should first.
Reading hooks and Malo (1994), I came across a new word eros. When I was reading Coats, I was very taken with discussion and focus on the body. While not the same context it is connected. I’m speaking tomorrow at the Washington State Association of School Social Workers conference about service learning and the work I was doing at the school district.
I also love that it is read by him. Makes it feel so much more personal connection with the author. Kind of like listening to Brené Brown read her own books.
Such a good book. It makes me want to try my hand at writing fiction. I love writing and put a lot of words to paper for my classes and work… but nothing like fiction. Still a lot of great gems. I haven’t ever really gotten into Steven King, but I do appreciate his love of reading.

This is quite the banner for a governmental website. It is astonishing to see how politicized a governmental entity can be! HUD really shouldn't be about left or right; it is a service for the American people. I was looking for a form to use as an example, and this is what I found. (https://www.hud.gov/hudclips/forms#openModal)

At one point, I was going to write a post about using sticky notes, timers, and a second display to help manage the classroom activities. It works pretty well as a way of visually communicating with the projector running. I think this is a much earlier edition, as we also added a cell phone stoplight. However, instead of just deleting the old screenshots, I figured I'd share them. This is what I would have projected in my behavior class, and then updated the relevant information.

@RadicalSocialWorker they really do make such a big difference. Thank you!!
You can see a video of my whole office.
I knew I wanted to put up posters and decorate more, but didn’t find any that I really wanted last year. I got it in my head to make my own, wanting to share some stronger messages. They are both heavily influenced by the design of the authors the content is drawn from… but here are my posters against racism and tyranny.

I'm a little bit behind on my professional podcast listening. But such a great episode... Building Bridges, Not Walls: Resisting Anti-Immigrant Policy (https://www.insocialwork.org/building-bridges-not-walls-resisting-anti-immigrant-policy/). While I've heard people talk about hate on a continuum and some of these aspects, I think this might have been the first time I've seen it directly tied to this model and the Pyramid of Hate from the Anti-Defamation League.

I don’t work in HR by any means, but having on my graduates message me tell me they got a job, then go into asking asking about insurance and what a copay is feels good. I still referred her to go to the agency but it is like supporting somebody as they make a life transition and starting their first “career job.” Pretty cool.

Taking some cues from YouTube and Streaming. We will be discussing the DSM in the next class, so I have created a forum for my students to post any questions they may have about the DSM, and I’ll address them during class. It can be kind of like the #AMA (Ask Me Anything) format that gets followed.

The day after, listening to Poolsuite FM (such a cool styled app https://apps.apple.com/us/app/poolsuite-fm/id1514817810).
Years ago, I started a discourse server (love it for other creators I follow) to have comments on my website. I stopped updating it and it has stopped being functional. Been on the back burner, meaning to delete for at least a year. I saw there was a lot of traffic from Google this month to a link on there from something crypto and I was like WHAT?? Without my involvement, it took on a life of its own. Now delated and saving myself $7 per month to not have the server. #StoryTime #cryptocalypse
One of the textbooks for my Summer class this semester. Coming out in 2016, it is a bit dated, but it is still excellent. It is full of impactful accounts that can be eye-opening if you have not been exposed to this type of information. Recognizing that the sweeping legislation passed by this administration on the 4th, the book highlights the importance of services like SNAP, which have seen severe cuts. My only hope is that as we rebuild, we build them even better and stronger. #books
I made buttons using @KeyboardMaestro on my @Elgato Stream Deck to that make it so I can programmatically move between student detail pages in my universities LMS, and expand their forms to read them, and if appropriate apply a grade. Makes it so I click these two buttons and then scroll to read vereses so much more clicking with my mouse. #Automation #highered
Reading Linquiti (2022), I came across a new word salutary. The new oxford dictionary also includes that it is often related to something negative. Also, don’t trust Grammarly to make mathematical changes. Losing 519 million is not the same as losing 1.5 billion.
Seeing it as grains of rice is also a great way to demonstrate some of this. I really enjoy preparing for class sometimes.
Although it's an older video, the graphical representation is impactful.
There are about 724 billionaires, whose 16 years of dropping a dollar a second wouldn't even cut their net worth in half. The top ten percent of households own 76% of all wealth in the U.S., while the bottom 50% of households own just 1% of all wealth #TaxTheRich.
I just updated a post from 2009. At the time, I wanted to experiment with Adobe Flash and created a short animation of dollars being dropped into a hole, one per second. Since I posted this over 16 years ago, it has been about 519 million seconds (or only that many dollars have been dropped).

Reading Linquiti (2022), came across a new word syllogism. I really enjoy the discussion of logic, and how we think. I haven't been exposed to many of the more formalized and academic terms and formats for making these arguments. You can follow along with me as I learn new words and see the entry at https://jacobrcampbell.com/dictionary/syllogism

Quixotic sounds almost like toxic, but for being too idealistic. I was probably more so when I was younger, but I probably am still somewhat.

I know that the lifetime limit for the Supreme Court is meant to be one of the checks and balances, but sure feels like our system has been broken and having more voter discretion in electing positions seems like a pretty good idea. But maybe it would increase politicalization of the judiciary? I do like any way that the public can hold officials accountable. https://flipboard.com/@npr/world-news-fqv71h77z/-/a-PcvyVhxaQMy2Ug4MwVWzpA%3Aa%3A3195441-%2F0

So proud of my students and all of our graduates.
One great thing about working with so many people in the field is getting new resources shared with us. I hadn't ever seen the Greater Good in Education before, but so many great activities for #teaching #SEL with activities for #K12education and even #highered
This is such a sad thing for our students and for my colleagues. My role and position will be okay. The grant was a great support to us starting our program and gave students opportunities to engage in school social work, which is very underrepresented in Washington schools.
I finished the other new textbook this semester. The Jarolmen and Bautista-Thomas book was okay. I appreciate the breadth of content they cover, the national focus on school social work, and the number of case examples. My students described it as easy to read, and they liked it as well. My major criticism is that it is new (updated 2023). Still, so many of the references aren't current, and there is a minimal focus on more updated information (for example, the discussion of school violence).

We like to keep weekends full:
1. McDonald's breakfast with daughter + friend
2. Cinco de Mayo parade
3. Birthday gift shopping
4. Hospital visit while I take daughter to skating party
5. Pick up grandbaby
6. Party with food, cake, piñata
7. Second party for nephew's confirmation (tents + DJ)
8. Maybe dancing tonight

Portrayal of my love of scholarship/academics:
I'm preparing for class and want to discuss school social work standards. I shared this with my class earlier this semester... telling them they were supposed to come out with an updated version in 2024 but it didn't seem to be published yet. I figured, let me look and see if it has been updated (now 11 weeks later). I let out a giddy sound when I saw the updated cover (see the PDF)!
End of the semester coming and finally finished this textbook. I really liked it. When I picked the book, it was because I welcomed a first chapter talking about students not liking program evaluation. So far students have reported liking the book. It feels direct and written to be read easily. I do feel like it lacks in focus on qualitative analysis, but a good textbook.

I don't know if it is really necessary, but when I record videos for my students, I do a whole video production #setup. Set my phone up as the camera, a microphone, and try to think about the background. Yes, I also put time and effort into the content first, but I want to make it the best I can.

Lots of medical focused services are facilitated by somebody making the best guess they can, that being said, I feel like dentistry is highly opinion driven. I’ve had two experiences where I had a dentist plan to do extensive work, they leave the practice (maybe fired), end then the new person says you don’t need to do all that.

Related and unrelated— my managed hosting provider for my Pixelfed server blocks cross-site from embedding my posts (I think it can potentially be a security concern). I sent them a ticket to ask them to change it. I feel like there is so much friction in using something like Pixelfed. I want to have a place that I own where I can share images. If it keeps not working, I might need to move. What are other options? Instagram if wanted engagement but 👎 https://vsp.ink/test-pixelfed
I feel lucky to be able to #travel for #SpringBreak, and I am trying to share some images, but they keep not federating (e.g., they are on my server - @photos, but when I look at the profile through my Mastodon Account, my recent ones aren't there. Sometimes we have to look to the small things for hope or even the lack of something. There is a house that I often walk by with my dog. For years I’ve been following their flags they raise in their yard. It has been Tump over the 🇺🇸, and then a string of others (🇺🇦, 🇮🇱, and more). A few years ago when you could tell they were upset at Biden and they moved to 🇨🇦 I wanted to tell them they might not be aware of politics there. During the election went back to Trump. Now, there is no flag.

I’m had the VHS tape of Rescuers Down Under (1991) when I was growing up. That, the Star Wars movies, and home alone I watched until I’m surprised they didn’t break the tape from having to be rewound so many times.
Listening to @npr like you do Saturday morning and a story about mice came on. Maybe it describes what happened to us. We had a trap and my wife saw the mouse on it in the evening. We went to sleep to deal with it in the morning. Morning came and the mouse and sticky trap was no where to be seen. I told everybody that it was maybe the Rescuers (as in from down under). But mouse like empathy might be a more realistic possibility.
I do think that the being extra is good, I just have to always be cautious to not fall too far into the rabbit hole.

From my Week 06 for my program evaluation class. https://presentations.jacobrcampbell.com/liCMyT/
My mind is still blown by the far-reaching impact of some of the executive orders. That is such an outrageous website comment. It is just the first time I’ve come across something organic as I am working on preparing for class. I think the resource I'm looking for might have been taken down.

When I had a friend recommend the episode to me, I knew I recognized the name. I read and reviewed her book On Becoming an Artist: Personal Experiences Connected To Research for Mindful Creativity (https://jacobrcampbell.com/resources/essays/book-review-becoming-an-artist-research-for-mindful-creativity/)
She is generally just a wonderful thinking and provides great insight and understanding around the scientific method.
One of the powerful moments to me was when she was explaining how values determine our perceptions. If I value being trusting, then maybe I will be perceived as gullible. Or if I value being flexible for people, that could be seen as inconsistent.
A great episode of the Huberman Lab Podcast. Her way of thinking and turning ideas on their head is powerful.

I guess I will test it again. Hopefully this time it works flawlessly.
Testing. The first time I shared this, it didn't have the `fediverse:creator` meta tag work properly, as well as the image preview. Hopefully, now it works.
I know many generations can say they are living in interesting times, but I do feel like these really fit that monicker. Me and some colleagues are presenting for our faculty day tomorrow and going to talk about self-care.
I spent the last while setting up a sever on my NAS (which has been under utilized) and am hosting umami to do analytics as well which looks really pretty and I’m so excited it works now. I struggled figuring out some port issues I created in setting it up.
I really like how my new Presentation sharing website has come out, and want to transition my whole website to the look. But that can happen until after this semester I think. But at least this semester I will be able to share my presentations again with my students and embed them into our LLM.
My distraction is hopefully almost complete. The problem with being technical is that I think I can effectively to more than I can. I can still do the things, but end up banging my head on my keyboard for long enough I can make it work work and love the outcome. It is the is it worth it to battle over it or not.
We took photos as a faculty the one they included was a good one, but didn’t have the grinch in it. Here are some more from our photo shoot.

For my next listen, I had to move away from such current topical texts and am back listening to fantasy/science fiction. I will admit it is a series about a far-off dystopian future where there is an enmeshed hierarchical structure of oppression and slavery and the battle that must be fought to move out of their caste system…. Maybe that means I haven’t totally moved away, and I am just looking at things from a different perspective.
In particular, I think his first two lessons are extremely timely:
The charge not to obey in advance. I see so many trying to adapt before he even takes office and that is so concerning. I think it is apt advice to to not give up ANY POWER unless we are forced and obligated. Sexondly, as there is all of this rhetoric about removing and destroying institutions, we must take the mantel up to protect them.

You can even read a much older rendition and discussion of this and even a video of me sharing my story from back in 2010 at my website, “About My Story, a Bit of Testimony” (https://jacobrcampbell.com/testimony/).
Because Jubilee was a Christian-based organization, you can see some old pictures of me and more about the spiritual aspects in a blog post I wrote, Reconnecting to the Divine: Book Review of Fox’s Creativity Book (https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2020/02/reconnecting-to-the-divine-book-review-of-foxs-creativity-book/).
I’ve shared my experiences leading up to my going to Jubilee in many places. While I was working on my Ph.D. I wrote a paper, The Path to the Ph.D.: Intertwining My Experiences and Research Topic (https://jacobrcampbell.com/resources/essays/intertwining-my-experiences-and-research-topic/) that gives the context of how I got to be interested in social work.
Last night, I got to participate in a conversation with The Broetje Family Trust (https://broetjefamilytrust.org ) about servant leadership, Jubilee Leadership Academy, and the impact relationships/connections can have in our community. It was a great event and it was beautiful to reconnect with people who have had a powerful impact on my life. They shared this collage with us, and you can see me participating in a panel and supports/staff/alumni from Jubilee.

I was going through my mid-term feedback, and I had this comment. I had a lot of positive feedback (and some things I can grow in). When we do hear positives, it is something to situate ourselves in and appreciate the sentiment. #gratitude #academia #warmfuzzies
I had an additional training I needed to fit in before my renewal this year. I’ve used NetCE before. It is fine, but I do prefer in person professional development. I did really like this course on PTSD I did though. You can see it at https://www.netce.com/courseoverview.php?courseid=2775
I finished my annual report for my licensure. Not required by the state, but helps keep me on track. I’ve updated the content I include, but same basic idea that I wrote about in 2019 [Creation of an Annual Report for CEUs for my LICSW](https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2019/10/creation-of-annual-report-for-ceus-for-licsw/). This year Washing State added required training in health equity we have to do.

Biomimicry is super interesting. It makes sense in looking for shared leadership developing systems that are reinforcing for all of the participants, even if there is role distinctions.

@statesdj health data is different than business data (as far as I understand). So things like heart rate, body temperature, and these metrics are stored as your health records. There might be different ways of storing that data, but it *can be* end to end encrypted meaning Apple doesn’t have access… and can’t supply even with a subpoena.
@RecDiffs, I absolutely appreciate the discussion on privilege, that I don’t find myself pushing to have people always refer to me as doctor. The very fact that I tend to tell people to just call me by my first name really is a picture of the privilege I have, although a number of my students refer to me as Dr Jacob.
Great episode (https://overcast.fm/+AAE5IPXcQTQ/43:37)

Also, I’m enjoying this Jazz Sunrise playlist.

I'm proud to be a part of this program, its development, and implementation! Ready to start classes tomorrow. https://www.applevalleynewsnow.com/news/heritage-university-granted-candidacy-for-master-of-social-work-program/article_fe9056dc-60ff-11ef-9d85-4b62800cd7a3.html

@hotdogsladies it really has a lot it makes you wonder about.
@fionabradley I could not agree more! Such an interesting project and wonderfully put together. For fun mine is attached and can be found at https://www.proquest.com/docview/2813493629
I when it is this hot, even starting at 9:30 is too late. Still, improvements #fitness #personalgrowth
@caseyliss my impression after using briefly, it makes the proposals sound more benign and more watered down. For example, asking about impact on immigrants it labels changes as "realigning" programs. The potential impact of removing legal status for people, making them eligible for deportation, and unable to work legally is way more than a realignment. A tool like this, while it try's to take out some of the rhetoric could be harmful as it makes it sounds like less extreme ideas.
@terminology I’m excited about this. I used to use it a ton. I’ve moved on and been using the Lookup App, but I’m interested in seeing where this goes!

@urbalejoluna@sciencemastodon.com I am planning on writing more on mine. Although it is not just focused on social work. It is more a bit of anything on my mind. But I just looked and the last post was in October 😞.
My niece gave a powerful graduation speech for her high school.

@atpfm @marcoarment I just finished listening and this came across my for you page (https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTLmTDUrY/) about Phish at the sphere. The algorithm got me (although not sure how, I don’t listen to them or watch this show). Hope it’s a great time. Sounds like it’s gonna be.
It is absolutely my intention to have my students feel this way (to have a safe and rigorous environment), and I'm glad to hear one of my describe feeling this is what their class experience is.
I was featured in Bringing the Real World to the Classroom – Wings Spring 2024
https://heritage.edu/bringing-the-real-world-into-the-classroom-wings-spring-2024/

@agiletortoise ordered. I’m excited about this. I’ve been wanting one. My phone spits out the USB C cable and constantly disconnects my wired car play.
I love the idea of data visualization being described as a side dish, mainly because I love side dishes and could eat meals consisting solely of side dishes. The article is from Midway (2020) Principles of Effective Data Visualization (https://doi.org/10.1016%2Fj.patter.2020.100141)

@Resister so many of us don’t have them enough places. Some places have them. I feel like there is a hierarchy that I appreciate.
Good - Recycling bins
Not enough - No recycling bins
Worse than not having - Trash can that has hole for recycling but goes to the same place as the trash
Also, loving hearing about your trip through the United States. The Pacific Northwesr is nice if you are looking for places to visit.

This version was just an adaption of their logo.
This was the first version that I made. Too much and too busy I think.
Well, the final version that we settled on.
After like 2 weeks of my ruby installation and everything being broken, I finally muddled my way through to fix it. How did I fix it, I'm not really 100% sure I know or could example how many help pages and things I tried. For now at least my systems are back to working. Am I likely to break it again. Probably, but hopefully not any time soon.
This was unexpected on my for you page, but happy social worker month.

@foodnoms, I love you app. Not sure the best location for a feature request. I see that sharing goals/food log is on your roadmap and something highly requested. There are probably a lot of ways you might implement that. For me, I would like to be able to print my food log or have some way of exporting the data (I know Apple Health, but the names of the foods). I know you have great shortcut support for data input, but I also wonder about this for some export as well. Could that be a stopgap?

@caseyliss I worked at a high school, and I tried to open callsheet today and got an error message. I fiddled around a bit and it looks like they actually block the Movie DB entirely. Not really your problem, but a data point for you. Not sure why the school would block them.
If somebody is interested in my story you can see some of it in my article “The Path to the Ph.D.: Intertwining My Experiences and Research Topic” at https://jacobrcampbell.com/resources/essays/intertwining-my-experiences-and-research-topic/
I don’t have any of my dad’s poems saved to easily find (they are in a box in my office), but he did a ton of artwork. Here is one of his works
Or Wats Freedom by C.G. has so much vivid imagery in it it. Take the lines:
—
devastated, emasculated,
dehumanized & petrified,
conditional precursors to a revolutionary suicide,
activism, pragmatism,
now or never, do or die,
fortified identities cause where I’m at isn’t who am I,
fortified my amenities to distract myself from the pain inside,
—
It continues, but the start is so good and got me thinking.
For example this poem Eye of the Beholder by x.C.G. Is really good.
Poetry from prisoners is so real. I have a bunch of poetry from my dad. I still want to go through it and organize it, but I never seem to have the emotional energy. @tumbleweird post Poetry from the Black Prisoners Caucus of Washington State Penitentiary (https://tumbleweird.org/sankofa-migration/) is so good and full intense and powerful examples.

I'm sayin'
When you think is peace and safety
A sudden destruction
Collective security for surety, yeah
@jimshreds @ttscoff@nojack.easydns.ca or maybe you gave him a piggy back ride…

I started reading Eisler and Fry (2019) in thinking about using partnership as a model for considering my dissertation research. In reading this section, I remembered being in Africa with a church group in 2001 and when we saw the Maasai people hearing about boys hunting lions to start manhood, but nothing about the genital mutilation practices. This massaginistic focus is right in line with the rest of the domanance seeking patterns for society.

@ttscoff@nojack.easydns.ca I really probably do. My system works, but it is way more time consuming. I know that Email Octopus also has an API. If you had an opportunity to email the script you have maybe I can play around with it and see if I can make it work for me, I’d be grateful. I’ll send a seperate message with my email.
@ttscoff@nojack.easydns.ca my system is way too convoluted and I keep thinking I need to change… but then I just feel overloaded. I am using Email Octopus and have a bunch of lists (I use one for each class I teach). I create markdown post on my Jekyll website. When the page builds (GitHub Pages), visit the page where I have some code that exports the post as HTML to a text box. I copy and paste it into MailChimps service to inline the css. Then I copy and paste that to Email Octopus and use them to send it.

@robb @connected this made me laugh so much. Great work!!

Thank you @ivory. I’m not sure what is going on for me. It’s not the compose screen. It is not working for me externally (like in photos) when I use the share sheet. I can add text, but I can’t seem to click on the photo like I can inside the app when I compose a message from there and use the photo picker.
@ivory when I share a photo to be posted, it doesn’t allow me to add the alt text for #accessability. I click on the photo and that used to let me change it. Am I doing something wrong? Also, enjoy that you added the discovery thing. Anything I can do to mirror another server or see more. I do self hosting mine is empty.
I’m excited to have these grow out of an old stump at my house!
I do really enjoy this show as a tech nerd, and hearing you talk about your experiences in the #mentalhealth corner I feel like I gain some insight as a #socialwork #therapist it’s good and I also agree more people should listen!

@beejjorgensen thank you. I just got a new one that uses the wireless brush. The article seems a bit over my head… but gotta save this incase I have problems with non official head replacements.

One thing I appreciate about #scifi is it can more clearly demonstrate a direction we are moving in society. The TV show Andor (a Star Wars Story) and their criminal system is a logical conclusion of the direction of US criminal systems. There are people that the government doesn’t care about, they just need people incarcerated to feed their war machine. Once you are inside anything can happen and there is no guarantee that anything will be fair or just.
Money is behind so much of the reason that the United States has an extremely high rate of #incarceration compared to the rest of the world. It is also connected with systematic #racism, as we have a disproportionately high rates and sentencing factors for black and brown people.

@mothninja this post makes me realize two things. First I think I have been missing out on not curating my own folder of these type of thing. Second, the alt text for a meme is so additive and helpful even for somebody without vision impairment. Yours are great, thank you for sharing.

@tumbleweird I’m really excited about all of the new events and activities that have been happening the last couple of years. Growing up my friends allways called it the “Dry Shitties.” I’ve never really agreed, but there is a lot more to do these days.

My mom got an award named after her for the work she has done in the community. She was the first to receive it this year, but what a legacy.
https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2023/10/honoring-my-mom-an-award-called-the-judith-dirks-award/
I do really love being able to get outside and be in such a beautiful area.

I also really appreciated Linjean et al. (2022) and their list of activities published by the CSWE for repairing harms done to Indigenous and tribal people. You can find it https://www.cswe.org/getmedia/a77aeb76-3b0f-442f-a166-43acca1fb652/7842-cswe_TeachersGuide_proof5_web.pdf
One benefit of national holidays, even if they don't mean having days off is the people sharing information. I got a lot of messages about today’s Indigenous People's Day. One thing I will share that I really like (although I saw it when they released the video at our faculty day in August) is the Yakmumami Tiicham. Heritage University Land Acknowledgement (https://youtu.be/MeuHAIhaRh8?si=SbH0XK_zDwxWv0Vf). The Ichishkíin language is very cool to be able to hear.
I took hundreds of photos and videos… but some behind the scenes video to show how get ready for any shot is.
I’ve referred students to them before. This kind of thing is so disheartening.

She also has such great verbal imagry and basics truths. Commments such as “for a word to be spoken, there must be silence. Before, and after” are one of the reasons I love the genre of fantasy/sci-fi so much.
One of the things I have really appreciated about the Ursula K Le Guin and description of magic is that it all about first knowing something’s name, as a prerequisite for having some power over the thing. I think this is practical in our lives we have to understand what something really is before we can really do anything to change it. That knowing the root of something is powerful.
My favorite #automation I’ve ever made on my Mac using @KeyboardMaestro. In preparing quizzes for for #teaching, it basically goes though formatted text document and copies and pastes the content of a quiz for our LMS so I don’t have to put each of the parts. You can see it in action in the video.

@tumbleweird I also didn’t know we had a chapter of Moms for Liberty here, but I am not surprised we do.

@jonobie I also am always interested when my clients talk about a service to know if they thought it was beneficial, what they had to do, etc. When I was doing case management, I’d often take people to get started with services, but then I leaned a ton being there and going though the process with them.

I tried showing my kids the #automation I use, but they weren’t that impressed. I still love it though.
I might be over the top, but I think sometimes it makes things better to go a little overboard. I spent too long today preparing a template for sending out a report a couple of times per year to the people I do LICSW supervision with. I think it helpful for me to review my records and send them something showing their progress. To go into the report, I designed a little circle chart to show their hours.
@admin I know for me it feels like a lot, but I don’t follow all that many people so it feels like following #SocialWork or the group it fills up my feed. But I can always mute it on my end if I decide it’s too much from the bot. I get wanting to make sure the word gets out. I wonder how many views each post get though all of the different hashtags and groups.
@tumbleweird such awesome opportunity for those youth!
@MartinVuilleme @socialwork it’s been different with different teens. Often I find it best if we are doing something together, drawing, walking, but not an intense front on conversation… but they can all be good strategies (other then the warning… most of the time I think people shut down).
@nzas95 I know I don’t have really have any good suggestions. The university i teach at only has a BASW program and isn’t really research focused. In my state University of Washington (I also see their SMART Center at all kinds of conferences presenting on their research) is more research focused where the other two universities are more clinical or generalist.
@vicgrinberg I sometimes get asked to do Spanish community presentations (my community has a very high Latinx population) which aren’t nearly as
complicated as more scientific work and I often decline knowing how much longer it takes me to prepare.
This playlist has been great tonight.

@bookstodon We ended up going for @rickriordan book Percy Jackson and the Lighting Theif (https://rickriordan.com/book/the-lightning-thief/). It’s been a pretty great success so far. They have wanted to keep listening, been talking about it, and been making some predictions about what is going to happen.
@islamicaudiobooks that one does look interesting.
@kopio Thank you for the suggestion. We started the first one, but I decided I might have to try listening to first before having kids listen. It was a bit much for them. Seemed like a good start though and looking forward to @marthawells book
@otterlove thank you. I ended up actually going with something that at least one of them has seen the movie of.
@Kristin I’ve had so many mentors over my life that have influence me and helped me grow to become who I am today. I think the ones early on in my career made the biggest impact, but I’m still growing. I have a co-worker, not really a menotor and I would say I’ve been an advocate for my students for years. But seeing how willing she is to tip the boat and stir things up have reminded that can be necessary and the right intervention sometimes.
Anybody on @bookstodon with #audiobook recommendation. Long road trip ahead with my #family, with plenty of opportunity to finish almost any book in the next couple of weeks. I love audiobooks (mostly sci-fi and fantasy). I’ve tried to get my kids (8, 10, 13 and 13) to be interested in audiobooks… but I have generally failed. I need something that will grab their attention. Would love to hear ideas and thoughts.
@MartinVuilleme thank you. I might have to do that. Backups would have been a great idea.
I also am thankful to have created at _Google Sheet_ Social Workers on Mastodon (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1G6OtsArvSTwhML-EfC-05hEdVqQ1x9RCCaYIpELyYp4/edit?usp=sharing), as I used it to help me rebuild some of my following list. If you are a social worker on Mastodon, you should consider adding yourself to the list.
I have a lot of information on my website. My latest post has information and links to my dissertation Adding to the Ellipsis After My Name: Earning My Ph.D. (https://jacobrcampbell.com/blog/2023/06/adding-to-the-ellipsis-after-my-name-earning-my-phd/)
I guess it's time to redo my #Introduction, I was on the server for **home.social**, and had no idea that they were shutting down until I stopped being able to refresh my feed. I work in a special #Education classroom with students with EBD doing #SocialWork. I teach as an adjunct. I just graduated with my Ph.D. where I conducted a study to examine using the PLC to learn and improve practice for Trauma-Informed Care. I'm a #apple and #technology nerd, enjoy the outdoors, and love my family!
I also found that a lot of my own writing I have self-published on my website (mostly papers from being at university) are also on Google Scholar and I've added them to my profile. They are in my profile, but you can also see all of them listed and organized on my website - https://jacobrcampbell.com/resources/
Just set up my Google Scholar profile. You can see my dissertation published there. https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=Zdwm8rMAAAAJ&hl=en

I'm kind of upset that #homesocial shut down. I didn't even know it did until two days after, and my timeline wouldn't load for hours. I will have to rebuild my Mastadon from scratch... but it convinced me to purchase a domain and do it on my own (well, through https://masto.host). The VPS is on my Birtcertificat stands for Very Special Person. I feel like the dot ink is like my little place to publish things and play some.
