Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn
In week eight, we continue to go through and talk about each of the statutes in the NASW Code of Ethics standards. In addition, this week we are combining standards three and four which cover ethical responsibilities in practice settings and as professionals. We’ll also discuss the third value, which is related to the dignity and worth of the person.
Week 8 Objectives:
- Understand and apply NASW’s ethical responsibilities in practice settings.
- Understand and apply NASW’s ethical responsibilities as professionals.
- Apply the principle of dignity and worth of a person to personal experience.
Unit Assignments
Read/Watch
- Reamer (2018a) chapters four and five or Reamer (2018b) chapter 4, depending on your textbook.
- Watch my lecture video Fall 2022 SOWK 430 Week 08: The Use of Person-First Language and Case Study Example and complete the embedded quiz
A–01: Asynchronous Participation and Engagement
For week eight, you must create at least two replies in the forums and post a video to the Flip video discussion forum.
- This week’s most significant engagement with the forums is related to engaging with the NASW Code of Ethics and the social workers’ ethical responsibilities to practice settings and other professionals. There are 18 different standards, most of which include lettered sub-standards. For this activity, students should select a sub-standard that other students have not written about. In the forum for that standard, you can post a reply discussing the importance of the standard, describing gray areas that might exist, and/or illuminating the implication for clients if the standard is not followed. Please indicate the standard you are writing about, so everybody knows which sub-standards have been discussed (e.g., “In Standard 3.01 (b)…”). There are forums for social workers’ ethical responsibilities in practice settings: 3.01 Supervision and Consultation, 3.02 Education and Training, 3.03 Performance Evaluation, 3.04 Client Records, 3.05 Billing, 3.06 Client Transfer, 3.07 Administration, 3.08 Continuing Education and Staff Development, 3.09 Commitments to Employers, and 3.10 Labor–Management Disputes. As well as social workers’ ethical responsibilities as professionals: 4.01 Competence, 4.02 Discrimination, 4.03 Private Conduct, 4.04 Dishonesty, Fraud, and Deception, 4.05 Impairment, 4.06 Misrepresentation, 4.07 Solicitations, and 4.08 Acknowledging Credit.
- Week Eight Textbook Discussion gives an optional space where students can discuss the textbook readings if they desire.
- All students are to post a flip video about the Dignity and Worth of a Person. You can see the forum post Flip Video: The Ethical Principle of Dignity and Worth of the Person or view the activity directly on Flip W-08: Dignity and Worth of the Person.
