Have a great week.

Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

This class semester is going by quickly. For week seven we are reading and talking about the ethical responsibilities we have as social workers to our colleagues. We will also be looking at how we connect with the value of social justice.

Week 7 Objectives

  • Discuss the meaning of the NASW value of Social Justice in your life.
  • Understand and apply Ethical Standard 2: Responsibilities to Colleagues.

Unit Assignments

Read/Watch

W-07 A-01: Asynchronous Class Engagement and Participation

The expectation is that each of your replies will be substantive and provide meaningful perspectives, contributing to the forum’s conversation and scholarship. They can relate to the prompts or build on conversations your peers share. There are three forums for this week, and you are expected to make at least 3 replies across any of the forums and read all of your peers’ replies. These forums include the following:

  • The most significant part of the work this week is Ethical Standard 2: Responsibilities to Colleagues (Sec 0 or Sec 2), where you choose a sub-standard no classmate has written about yet and discuss its importance, its gray areas, or what it means for clients when it is not followed.
  • Students can talk through the textbook reading in Chapter 3 Reading Discussion (Sec 0 or Sec 2), including Reamer’s discussion of conflict between colleagues and of addressing a colleague’s impairment or unethical conduct.
  • Share a time you or someone you know promoted social justice or challenged injustice in Ethical Principle: Social Justice (Sec 0 or Sec 2).

A-02: Reflecting on Biases Worksheet

Meta: Points 50 points (10% of total points); Deadline Monday 10/12/26 at 08:00 AM; Completion via MyHeritage Assignments as an uploaded document. The handout with the Assignment Description and Rubric (Sec 0 or Sec 2), the Editable Worksheet to Complete (Sec 0 or Sec 2), and the Assignment Detail (Sec 0 or Sec 2) where you turn it in are all on MyHeritage.

Unit Resources

You can listen to a podcast episode for this week’s reading Deep Dive on Chapter 3: Ethical Boundaries Between Social Work Colleagues, or see the entire series Deep Dive: Reamer (2023).

I wrote a short essay, Depiction of Social Justice Needs through Theoretical Framing that talks about social justice and the need for the “implementation of social justice must include a description of the presenting problems, the ramifications and implications of those problems, and groundwork for what needs to change.”

You can see the online version of the NASW Code of Ethics.

I really appreciate feedback about teaching and my courses. There is an opportunity to provide mid-term feedback. I read the feedback and find it helpful. You can access the survey by going to SOWK 430 Survey (Sec 0 or Sec 2).
