Have a great week. I won’t get my video posted until Friday.

Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

In week eight, we continue to go through and talk about each of the statutes in the NASW Code of Ethics standards. This week covers standards three and four, ethical responsibilities in practice settings and as professionals, and each has its own forum. We’ll also discuss the third value, which is related to the dignity and worth of the person.

Week 8 Objectives:

  • Understand and apply NASW’s ethical responsibilities in practice settings.
  • Understand and apply NASW’s ethical responsibilities as professionals.
  • Apply the principle of dignity and worth of a person to personal experience.

Unit Assignments

Read/Watch

  • Read Chapters 4 and 5 in Reamer (2023), Ethical Responsibilities in Practice Settings and Ethical Responsibilities as Professionals
  • Watch my lecture video, coming probably Friday this week

W-08 A-01: Asynchronous Class Engagement and Participation

The expectation is that each of your replies will be substantive and provide meaningful perspectives, contributing to the forum’s conversation and scholarship. They can relate to the prompts or build on conversations your peers share. There are four forums for this week, and you are expected to make at least 3 replies across any of the forums and read all of your peers’ replies. These forums include the following:

  • The most significant part of the work this week is Ethical Standard 3: Responsibilities in Practice Settings (Sec 0 or Sec 2), where you choose a sub-standard no classmate has written about yet and discuss its importance, its gray areas, or what it means for clients when it is not followed.
  • In Ethical Standard 4: Responsibilities as Professionals (Sec 0 or Sec 2), the same approach applies to the standards on competence, private conduct, dishonesty, impairment, and the other responsibilities social workers carry as professionals.
  • Students can talk through the textbook reading in Chapters 4 and 5 Reading Discussion (Sec 0 or Sec 2), including when a social worker might be justified in breaking a commitment to an employer and what to do when a client turns up at your own recovery meeting.
  • Share a time you or someone you know promoted the dignity and worth of a person, or a time it was not honored, in Ethical Principle: Dignity and Worth of the Person (Sec 0 or Sec 2).
