Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

Week nine is our last week focusing on the different statutes listed in the NASW code of ethics. These statutes include responsibilities that social workers have to our profession as social workers and to society itself.

This week we are covering:

  • Ethical Standards 5 and 6
  • Values: The Importance of Human Relationships

Week 9 Objectives:

  • Understand and apply NASW’s ethical responsibilities to the social work profession, including integrity of the profession and ethical evaluation and research.
  • Understand and apply NASW’s ethical responsibilities to the broader society, including social welfare, public participation, public emergencies, and social and political action.
  • Explain how protections for research participants, such as informed consent and the right to withdraw, developed and why they matter in social work evaluation and research.
  • Apply the principle of the importance of human relationships to personal experience.

Unit Assignments

Read/Watch

  • Read Chapters 6 and 7 in Reamer (2023), Ethical Responsibilities to the Social Work Profession and Ethical Responsibilities to the Broader Society

W-09 A-01: Asynchronous Class Engagement and Participation

The expectation is that each of your replies will be substantive and provide meaningful perspectives, contributing to the forum’s conversation and scholarship. They can relate to the prompts or build on conversations your peers share. There are four forums for this week, and you are expected to make at least 3 replies across any of the forums and read all of your peers’ replies. These forums include the following:

  • The most significant part of the work this week is Ethical Standard 5: Responsibilities to the Social Work Profession (Sec 0 or Sec 2), where you choose a sub-standard no classmate has written about yet and discuss its importance, its gray areas, or what it means for clients when it is not followed.
  • Social welfare, public participation, public emergencies, and social and political action are the standards you can choose from in Ethical Standard 6: Responsibilities to the Broader Society (Sec 0 or Sec 2), using the same approach.
  • In Chapters 6 and 7 Reading Discussion (Sec 0 or Sec 2), students can talk through the textbook reading, including what to do when a law or agency directive seems to work against clients’ basic needs.
  • Share a time when something was only possible through a relationship with another person, or a time human relationships were not used to promote well-being, in Ethical Principle: Importance of Human Relationships (Sec 0 or Sec 2).
