I hope you are all doing well. Make sure to check out my lecture video this week and don’t stress about so may options for forums you can post in. You only have to make a minimum of three replies.

Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

In week three, we are continuing to examine the history of social work and looking to gain insight into career options in social work. You are doing a great job so far in the course. We’re going to continue with outside videos for the week. I also have a short lecture video for you to watch.

Week Three Objectives

• Further explore the Settlement House Movement
• Examine the broad range of career options for social workers
• Compare how social work is practiced across different fields of practice, populations, and levels of the system
• Locate and interpret current labor market information about the profession
• Consider what social work looks like in tribal, Indigenous, and rural communities in our own region

W-03 A-01: Asynchronous Class Engagement and Participation

There are a lot of forums open this week (ten total options). Six of them look at different areas of social work practice, and the rest ask you to go looking at real jobs, real wage data, tribal and Indigenous practice, and this week’s videos. You are not required to reply in every forum. Pick the ones you are curious about. You need to make a minimum of three replies across any of the forums. Replies can respond to the prompts or build on what a classmate has posted. Even though you do not post everywhere, the expectation is that you read through the whole discussion. There are ten forums this week:

• Aging, Long-Term Care, and Developmental Disabilities (Sec 0 or Sec 2)
• Health Care and Hospice Social Work (Sec 0 or Sec 2)
• Behavioral Health, Clinical, and Private Practice (Sec 0 or Sec 2)
• Children, Families, Child Welfare, and Schools (Sec 0 or Sec 2)
• Justice, Public Welfare, and Workplace Social Work (Sec 0 or Sec 2)
• Macro Practice: Policy, Politics, Advocacy, and Administration (Sec 0 or Sec 2)
• Closer to home, Tribal and Indigenous Social Work (Sec 0 or Sec 2) looks at practice in tribal communities.
• In the Job Board Scavenger Hunt (Sec 0 or Sec 2), students go to Indeed, Idealist, or NASW JobLink and bring back what social work jobs actually look like right now.
• What the Labor Data Says (Sec 0 or Sec 2) sends students to the Bureau of Labor Statistics to see what the profession looks like in numbers.
• The settlement house movement is discussed in How Jane Addams Changed the World (Sec 0 or Sec 2).

I’m encouraging people to consider attending the State of Our Youth Symposium. It will be a great event and you will learn a lot about the what trends look like for youth in our community. The website for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is a wealth of information. Students can consider membership with the NASW, but all of the resources used this week are offered free by our professional network. I am a member of the NASW and the Washington State School Social Workers Association.

Most of the images in this week’s forums come from NASW’s Social Work Month — Logos & Infographics page, which has the whole “Types of Social Workers” set in one place. NASW also keeps practice hubs with much deeper material on areas of practice, and members can join special practice sections.

For the jobs and wages side of the week, the two places to start are the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook entry for Social Workers and the May 2025 OEWS Occupation Profiles. Job boards worth knowing are Idealist (nonprofit-focused), NASW JobLink (our profession’s own board), and the general boards like Indeed and Monster.

This week there is a short video by Mr. Beat (2020) regarding Jane Addams that you are to watch.
