Unit Introduction and What You Will Learn

Week two is asynchronous. Students will read about a typical day for a school social worker and some content published by the School Social Work Association of America. You will read and discuss the common tasks, roles, and skills required of a school-based social worker. The following are some of the week’s learning objectives.

• Describe key responsibilities and daily activities of school social workers.
• Apply theoretical frameworks to real-world student situations.
• Reflect on personal and professional competencies needed for effective school-based practice.
• Identify and analyze essential skills used by school social workers in diverse educational settings.

W-02 A-01: Asynchronous Participation and Engagement

The expectation is that each of your replies will be substantive and provide meaningful perspectives, contributing to the forum’s conversation and scholarship. They can be related to the prompts or building on conversations shared by peers. There are five forums for this week, and you are expected to make at least 6 replies across any of the forums and read all of your peers’ replies. These forums include the following:

• Students engage with the Spin the Wheel discussion by creating or responding to questions grounded in the National School Social Work Practice Model 2.0, connecting classroom frameworks to reflective practice.
• Using theory in action, the Case Examples of Using a Theoretical Technique forum invites students to describe how a model is applied with a specific client or student.
• Prompts from the textbook serve as a springboard in Chapter 2 Discussion Questions, where students reflect on topics like advocacy, school context, and social worker responsibilities through real or observed experiences.
• The School Social Work Roles: Thoughts, Experiences and the Future thread encourages students to connect assigned readings and professional guidelines to their practicum experiences and future career aspirations.
• Turning inward, Skills Necessary for School Social Work prompts participants to reflect on professional competencies, share resources, and identify both strengths and areas for continued development.

We talked about the School Social Work Association of America’s Role of School Social Worker and their National School Social Work Practice Model 2.0 during class, but we will continue to engage in this content via the forums.

I won’t be posting a lecture video this week, since we discussed school social work roles in our in-person class.
